<statement>Pivot Area Centroids are part of the Irrigated Areas layer development. The Irrigated Areas polygon feature class is the result of a collaborative mapping effort by the University of Delaware (UD) and Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). Irrigated Areas is a baseline of irrigated fields in Delaware that DNREC will continue to build on as new well permits are issued for irrigation systems. James Adkins (UD) created the two coverages one from 2011 and another from 2018. The 2011 dataset aligns with the fields used in the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain research by U.S. Geological Survey, University of Delaware Agricultural Extension that was previously available on FirstMap as the Center Pivot Irrigation layer (see https://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/0932/report.html for more information). The 2018 dataset added new irrigated fields and any irrigated fields that replaced older fields. The 2018 dataset had two types of geometry - lines and polygons. For irrigated fields that were circle shaped (i.e., crop circles), a polygon was created. If the fields were "pies" or corners of fields then lines and arcs were used to create the shape. In Sussex, irrigated areas not perfectly circular or pie-shape (i.e. drip irrigation fields) were shaped as polygons. However, perfect circles in Sussex were lines. In New Castle County and Kent all areas were lines. Google Earth was used to digitize the shapes. James Adkins shared this data with Tracy DeLiberty (UD) for processing. Updates were made by Tracy DeLiberty in ArcGIS desktop software and QGIS to account for overlapping fields and create uniform geometry of irrigated areas throughout Delaware. If a 2018 field overlapped 50% (or more) of an older field, then the 2018 field is a replacement was used and the 2011 field removed. Finally, Sharon Ungerer (DNREC) combined both updated polygons from 2018 and 2011. Sharon Ungerer removed all attributes except those that will be maintained by DNREC moving forward. Sharon Ungerer and other DNREC staff working in the Water Allocations program will continue to digitize fields and maintain the Irrigated Areas coverage. </statement>
